ODESSA, Texas – For a second consecutive doubleheader, St. Edward's softball followed a close defeat with an overwhelming victory, defeating Texas Permian Basin 11-0 in five innings to split the series.
KYLEN PADGETT (4-2) pitched a complete game for St. Edward's, striking out three with only two walks and three hits surrendered in the shutout victory.
SOFIA APONTE and MEGAN MORRIS hit back-to-back singles in the first, giving Morris the RBI and the Hilltoppers the lead. JERZIE PELHAM added an RBI single in the third to start a five-run inning highlighted by LAUREN HOYT's three-run blast and punctuated by KATIE DILLON's RBI single into left field for the 6-0 lead.
Aponte and Morris hit back-to-back singles again in the fourth and Pelham drove in Aponte with the sacrifice fly to center field. Martinez drove in Morris on a sac bunt, reaching on an error, and Hoyt delivered a sac fly for the 9-0 lead. CIANA RODRIGUEZ put St. Edward's into double figures with an RBI single to right-center.
Morris added an insurance run in the fifth on the fielder's choice to second, and Padgett retired three of four in the fifth to end the game.
Morris hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice and Aponte hit 2-for-4 with two runs. Hoyt hit 1-for-2 with a game-high four RBI, and Rodriguez hit 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
St. Edward's improves to 12-10 with a 6-6 record. The Hilltoppers will return home for a big weekend hosting nationally-ranked Lubbock Christian and Angelo State on Friday and Sunday.
