AUSTIN, Texas – KYLEN PADGETT threw a complete-game shutout and the Hilltopper defense made critical plays behind her to open St. Edward's doubleheader against Lubbock Christian with a 3-0 victory over the Chapparals.
Padgett retired the first six Lubbock Christian hitters in order, and St. Edward's struck at the bottom of the first.
SOFIA APONTE showcased her speed and put some dirt on her uniform, legging out a one-out double on the slide with a line drive down the left-field line.
SLOANE HILL followed with an RBI single to the same spot and Aponte took two bases, diving into home for the lead.
Lubbock Christian's first two hitters reached on a walk and a hit batter in the third. However, Piper Garcia popped up trying to move the runners over on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Kadin Vine grounded out, and Padgett froze Kawehi Illi for the big strikeout to escape unscathed.
St. Edward's used its speed to catalyze two more runs in the fourth.
MEGAN MORRIS and
JERZIE PELHAM opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Morris opened with a leadoff infield single, then Pelham pushed a hard-rolling bunt between two hard-charging infielders.
CIANA RODRIGUEZ moved both over with a sacrifice bunt, and
LAUREN HOYT drove Morris in on a fielder's choice with no outs. After Hoyt stole second,
ARIANNA VIDALES drove in Pelham with a groundout for the 3-0 lead.
Padgett struggled to open the fifth, surrendering back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases. However, St. Edward's kept its composure, recording three consecutive outs to get out of the jam, neutralizing the Lady Chaps' last genuine threat.
Pelham hit 2-for-3 with a run scored. Dillon, Aponte, Hill, and Morris each had a hit. Hoyt and Vidales both recorded RBI. Padgett went all seven innings, striking out four with three walks and two runs surrendered in the shutout. St. Edward's improves to 13-10 with a conference record 7-6 record.
