ODESSA, Texas – St. Edward's softball surrendered two runs with bases loaded on a bunt and the Hilltoppers lost 3-1 to Texas Permian Basin to open Sunday's doubleheader.
LISETTE URQUIDEZ started in the circle and pitched a complete game for St. Edward's, striking out five with two walks, nine hits, and two earned runs surrendered. The Hilltoppers left eight runners stranded, all in scoring position, with six hits and four walks drawn.
St. Edward's struck first in the top of the first.
KATIE DILLON opened with a leadoff bunt for a single, then stole second and advanced to third on the throwing error from the plate.
MEGAN MORRIS drove her in with a groundout RBI.
Texas Permian Basin tied the game with two singles and a stolen base in the bottom of the inning. Sanford led off with a single to left field, stole second, and scored on Quintero's single to center field.
The Hilltoppers put two on with two outs on consecutive walks in the second, advancing both on a wild pitch, but
ARIANNA VIDALES went down looking to end the inning.
St. Edward's had runners on second and third with one out in the third, but Dillon was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and the Hilltoppers came away empty.
Quintero drew a one-out walk in the third, and the Falcons loaded the bases with consecutive singles, including a bunt. Ramirez bunted with bases loaded but third baseman
AUDRI CASTILLO's throw to the plate was late and off-target, plating an extra run for the 3-1 lead.
Ava Martinez pinch-hit in the sixth and drew a leadoff walk, and the Hilltoppers turned that into a run with back-to-back sacrifice bunts, but Dillon went down looking to end the game.
