AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's softball battled against the No. 4-ranked Angelo State Rambelles, but dropped both games in the doubleheader.
Game 1: Angelo State 16, St. Edward's 7
St. Edward's fought back from every Angelo State run until the Rambelles put together a five-run seventh inning for the 16-7 win.
Angelo State opened the game with a two-run blast from Tatiana Trotter. The Rambelles added five more runs in the fourth, getting four from Erin Plunkett's grand slam, for the 7-0 lead.
LAUREN HOYT responded with a grand slam in the bottom of the inning. The Hilltoppers reloaded the bases and scored a third run when
SOFIA APONTE drew a walk.
ELLA HUTZLER drove in
CIANA RODRIGUEZ.
Angelo State's Brand hit a two-RBI double in the fifth, and Trotter hit a two-run home run in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-4.
St. Edward's loaded the bases to start the sixth, but a double play with a run scored halted the momentum. The Hilltoppers salvaged it with three consecutive singles, getting RBI from Hutzler and
MEGAN MORRIS.
Angelo State scored five in the seventh, highlighted by Applin's solo blast.
Morris and
ARIANNA VIDALES hit 3-for-4, with Morris driving in an RBI and scoring a run. Rodriguez hit 2-for-4 with two runs.
Game 2: Angelo State 4, St. Edward's 3
St. Edward's and Angelo State went an extra inning in the second game of the doubleheader with the Rambelles escaping with a 4-3 win over St. Edward's.
Angelo State struck first on an Applin RBI double in the first. Hutzler tied the game in the third with an RBI double to center field. Angelo States recaptured the lead in the fourth on Waters' single, and Hutzler answered against with a solo blast in the sixth.
Two errors cost St. Edward's a run in the seventh, but Morris tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double. Trotter hit an infield single with two outs in the eighth, legging out the throw to allow the winning run to score.
St. Edward's is now 13-13 and 7-8 in conference play. The Hilltoppers host Oklahoma Christian next Friday.
