AUSTIN, Texas – TREVOR SEBEK laid down a walk-off bunt in the bottom of the seventh, and St. Edward's baseball battled back from an 11-3 deficit to defeat Texas A&M International 16-15 to tie the four-game series.
After surrendering eight runs in the third inning, St. Edward's threw everything and the kitchen sink at the Dustdevils to climb back. Then they threw
DYLAN TATE at Texas A&M International for good measure, getting the out-of-the-bullpen win from St. Edward's season-long right fielder.
St. Edward's made multiple lineup changes after Friday's loss, most notably inserting
DAVID RIPPLE at third, moving Sebek to second, and
TRAVIS CHESTNUT back into the outfield alongside
GRAYSON THALLMAN, who started for Tate.
The moves paid direct dividends, getting a 2-for-4, four-RBI performance with a pair of runs from Ripple. The lineup changes also had trickle-down effects late in the game.
GEORGE HETTRICK had the rare struggling start on the mound, going 2.2 innings with six hits, three walks, and eight runs surrendered. Abriam Medina put Texas A&M International on the scoreboard with an RBI double to deep center in the top of the first inning. St. Edward's answered with three in the bottom of the inning.
Travis Chesnut and
CONNOR COX reached on a leadoff walk and infield single. Chestnut stole third to get in a better scoring position, setting up
LANCE LITTLE's sac fly RBI. After
MARCO BARRERA reached on a walk,
CARLO FIGUEROA lined a two-RBI double down the left-field line for the 3-1 lead.
Hettrick surrendered a hit and a walk, then hit a batter to load the bases. He walked one run in but recovered to strike out Joseph Cruz, mitigating the damage to just one more run that crossed on a narrowly avoided double play.
Texas A&M International exploded for eight runs on seven hits in the third, scoring all eight with two outs, highlighted by a grand slam from Joseph Cruz, taking an 11-3 lead on a wild pitch.
St. Edward's loaded the bases in kind, getting two walks and a single with one out in the bottom of the inning.
NICHOLAS ANDERSON drove in the first of seven runs in the inning with a bloop infield single that dropped between the middle infielders and pitcher.
TREVOR SEBEK drew a walk to score Barrera, and Chestnut cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple. Cox followed with a two-run blast to bring St. Edward's to within 11-10.
Haziel Cruz hit a leadoff home run to start the fourth, and Omar Cervantes hit a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 14-10.
Ripple earned a run back in the bottom of the inning with a solo blast into the right-field net. After Texas A&M International scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, Ripple ripped a two-RBI single through the right side to pull within 15-13.
After going through four pitchers and 15 runs in the first five innings, St. Edward's turned to Tate out of the bullpen, who was available due to the lineup changes. Tate flashed his arm on Friday, throwing a runner out at home, then featured it in two innings on the mound.
Tate retired the side in order in the sixth, striking out Cervantes looking in three pitches. Texas A&M International threatened in the top of the seventh on Issac Stanwick's one-out triple to right-center, but Tate retired the next two on a flyout to Chestnut and ground out to Ripple to escape unscathed.
Texas A&M International's middle infielders committed two critical errors in the seventh, and St. Edward's took advantage. Little reached on an error by shortstop Alan Vielma, exiting the game for pinch-runner
KADE NATHMAN. Then, Dustdevil reliever Sota Inden hit Barrera. Texas A&M International turned to Dannel Marrero out of the bullpen, who walked a pinch-hitting
JEREMY HILL.
Ripple followed with a grounder to second, driving in pinch-runner Nathman, and
DIEGO SOLIS tied the game on a sacrifice fly to center. After Marrero reloaded the bases by hitting
JAKE WILEY, Sebek perfectly executed a bunt to score Hill for the win.
Cox, Ripple, and Sebek each had two hits. Ripple had a team-high four RBI, and Chestnut added three. Barrera scored a team-high four runs. Chestnut, Cox, Little, Ripple, and Sebek scored two.
