AUSTIN, Texas – KATIE DILLON helped St. Edward's bounce back from a first-game loss with a 4-for-4 performance in Game 2 to earn a split against Texas A&M International in the penultimate doubleheader of the regular season.
Game 1: Texas A&M International 3, St. Edward's 1
Victoria Espinoza broke open a 1-1 tie with a perfectly placed bunt in the sixth, and Texas A&M International opened the doubleheader with a 3-1 victory over the Hilltoppers.
After retiring six of the first seven Dustdevils, starting pitcher
KYLEN PADGETT walked two in the third, setting up Victoria Gonzalez's RBI single through the right side for the game's first run. Dillon responded with an RBI infield single in the third to tie the game.
Zaria Brigham drew a leadoff walk in the sixth, Azalea Ramos entered to pinch run, and Isabella Perez moved her into scoring position with a sac bunt. After Queenandra Dunn grounded out to second, an error on a dropped foul ball extended the inning for Texas A&M International, and Espinoza took advantage with a perfectly executed bunt for a single, beating Hill's throw to first. At the same time, Perez rounded third and scored with no one covering home for the go-ahead run.
Kennedy Griego's RBI double in the seventh added an insurance run, and St. Edward's went down in order in the bottom of the inning. Dillon hit 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Game 2: St. Edward's 6, Texas A&M International 2
St. Edward's kept its postseason destiny in its own hands thanks to the steady hands of Dillon, who hit 4-for-4 at the plate and put out four Dustdevils from her spot in right field defensively for the 6-2 win.
Dillon's speed was a game changer, reaching with a single in the first on a bunt, stealing second, then scoring from there on
SLOANE HILL's RBI single to right field.
Texas A&M International answered with two runs in the second. Garcia hit an RBI double after Brigham drew a leadoff walk and stole second. The Dustdevils added a second run due to an error.
Dillon struck again with an RBI single down the right-field line, scoring
ARIANNA VIDALES from second to tie the game.
St. Edward's broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. Vidales and Dillon opened with back-to-back singles, getting to second and third. The Hilltoppers scored two runs on an error on Hill's sac bunt attempt, then two more on
SOFIA APONTE's two-RBI double to left field.
The Hilltoppers remain in control of the eighth seed in the LSC Tournament and can secure a playoff spot with wins in the regular-season doubleheader finale against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
