TYLER, Texas – St. Edward's women's cross country opened the season with a second-place finish at the UT Tyler Cross Country Open, placing two in the top 10 and four in the top 20 in the Hilltopper season opener.
The Hilltoppers rested several runners in anticipation of the short turnaround until next week's Texas A&M Invitational, but senior
DELANEY LONG and junior
SAMMY SALAZAR stepped up to lead St. Edward's in a paced run.
Long clocked a 19:20.2 to place fourth, closing in a group with three UT Tyler runners, finishing 18 seconds off the top spot. Salazar followed in eighth at 19:50.9. Sophomores
VICTORIA HOYT and
ADRIANA RODRIGUEZ rounded out the top 20 in 14th and 19th at 20:13.3 and 20:34.3, getting a personal best from Rodriguez. Julia Gainar was the fifth Hilltopper to cross at 21:26.6.
St. Edward's will return to action in full force next Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational.
