GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – St. Edward's women's soccer and Fort Lewis College went head-to-head in a defensive battle, with the latter breaking through on an unassisted goal near the 83rd minute for the 1-0 Fort Lewis victory.
Both teams played on even terms in the first half, earning a pair of corner kicks each, with Fort Lewis taking six shots to St. Edward's five.
Five different Hilltoppers generated a shot in the first half, putting pressure early with attempts from
TAYLOR WILLIAMSON and
KATIE FITZPATRICK in the first three minutes.
A pair of offside penalties squandered opportunities in minutes 10 and 15, and Fort Lewis put two shots on goal over the next six minutes – both stopped by
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM. The Skyhawks fired off three shots in quick succession midway through the first half, putting one on frame and sailing two wide. The Hilltoppers generated two more opportunities near the end of the half from
ABIGAIL HALL and
ANDREA SANTANA.
Fort Lewis controlled the ball in the second half, generating 12 shots to just two for the Hilltoppers, placing three on goal. St. Edward's keeper Daria Schlubohm stopped the first two, but Jenna Salazar found the back of the net at the 82:50 mark.
St. Edward's leaves Colorado 0-2 to start the season. The Hilltoppers return home to host North Greenville University on Thursday, September 11, at 4:00 p.m.
