Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Jesse Blanchard

Late Rally Sends Hilltoppers to Overtime, Buffs Escape in Canyon

CANYON, Texas — On a night that demanded poise, patience, and resolve, No. 17 St. Edward's men's basketball matched every punch from No. 20 West Texas A&M before coming up just short in an 84-82 overtime loss Thursday night at the First United Bank Center.

The Hilltoppers erased a nine-point halftime deficit, forced overtime on the road against a nationally ranked opponent, and had multiple chances late before the Buffs closed the door at the free-throw line in the final seconds.

BLAKE NIELSEN carried the offensive load for St. Edward's, finishing with a game-high 27 points on 11-of-21 shooting while playing more than 40 minutes. MASON COURTNEY added 16 points, including the pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining in regulation that tied the game at 74 and sent it to overtime. CONOR MCMANUS chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds, and JAMISON KAY grabbed 11 rebounds to go with seven points.

West Texas A&M struck first, leaning on early perimeter shooting to build momentum. The Buffs hit eight three-pointers in the first half and took a 47–38 lead into the break, despite St. Edward's controlling the paint and the glass. The Hilltoppers generated second-chance opportunities and consistently attacked inside, but struggled to convert at the free-throw line early, leaving points on the table.

St. Edward's response after halftime was immediate and deliberate.

Nielsen and McManus began to find rhythm offensively, and the Hilltoppers' defense tightened, holding West Texas A&M to 32.3 percent shooting in the second half. A 7-0 St. Edward's run midway through the period trimmed the deficit to single digits, and the game slowly tilted into a possession-by-possession battle.

With under three minutes remaining in regulation, Nielsen scored on a turnaround jumper to tie the game at 68. Kay followed with a transition layup to give the Hilltoppers their first lead of the half, but the Buffs answered. Neither team blinked down the stretch.

Courtney's calm at the line with 12 seconds left evened the score once more, and West Texas A&M missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer, sending the contest to overtime tied 74–74.

The extra session opened with a three from the Buffs, but Nielsen responded immediately, scoring six of St. Edward's eight overtime points. His turnaround jumper with 2:53 remaining gave the Hilltoppers an 80-79 lead.

West Texas A&M answered again.

Two free throws, a steal and fast-break layup swung momentum back to the Buffs, and after Kay converted a one-and-one to pull St. Edward's within one in the final minute, West Texas A&M iced the game at the free-throw line with five seconds remaining.

St. Edward's finished the night with a 50-46 edge on the glass and outscored the Buffs 44–24 in the paint, but the difference came at the stripe. The Hilltoppers shot 52.2 percent from the free-throw line, while West Texas A&M converted 84 percent.

Despite the result, the Hilltoppers showed their mettle in a hostile environment, trading blows with one of the Lone Star Conference's top contenders and proving once again that they are built for March.
St. Edward's returns to action Saturday as conference play continues.
