Hilltoppers Take Renewed Offensive Rhythm Into North Texas Road Trip

| By:
AUSTIN, Texas — St. Edward's volleyball finally broke its early-season pattern of splitting each week's slate, finding its rhythm with consecutive sweeps. Now, the Hilltoppers take that momentum on the road, where keeping the attack connected will be essential against Texas Woman's defensive persistence and DBU's balanced firepower.

St. Edward's travels to Denton to face Texas Woman's on Friday at 6 p.m. inside Kitty Magee Arena, then heads to Dallas for a Saturday matchup with DBU at 2 p.m. in the Burg Center. The Hilltoppers enter the week 9-8 overall and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play after sweeping Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International.

ALTHEA MORRIS' return restored the steady pulse behind the Hilltopper offense. St. Edward's has won the last nine sets she has played, sweeping Midwestern State before her absence in losses to Lubbock Christian and UT Tyler, then picking up where it left off last weekend.

Morris leads the LSC with 10.71 assists per set, totaling 600 through her first 56 sets. Her distribution has helped keep St. Edward's among the conference's most productive attacks, ranking fourth with 13.11 kills per set. KELLI FORDING remains its primary finisher, sitting fourth in the league with 3.61 kills per set and 202 total kills.

Last weekend also showcased how difficult the Hilltoppers can become to defend when another attacker commands equal attention. KAYLEN LEMBCKE delivered 17 kills with only one error on 22 swings against Texas A&M International, hitting .727. Fording added 14 kills on .414 hitting as the tandem combined for 31 kills against three errors in a match the Hilltoppers finished hitting .389.

That efficiency is the next step for an offense whose season-long .188 hitting percentage ranks ninth in the conference. St. Edward's has shown it can score in bunches, but this trip will test its ability to sustain that production when the first swing comes back and clean attacking opportunities become harder to find.

Texas Woman's enters 5-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play, but its record comes with a significant home-and-away distinction. The Pioneers are 4-2 inside Kitty Magee Arena, compared with 1-5 in true road matches, and possess the defensive pieces to make an opponent work through extended rallies.

TWU ranks third in the LSC with 17.47 digs per set and fourth with 2.07 blocks. Alyssa Rojo, the conference's preseason Defensive Player of the Year, anchors the back row with 5.15 digs per set, second in the league. Montserrat Soto-Talavera averages a block per set, tied for fifth.

Mary Grace King remains TWU's leading attacker for the season, ranking eighth in the conference with 3.20 kills per set. Lorena Gómez averages 6.52 assists per set, with Cat Millsap taking a prominent role alongside her in recent matches, including a team-high 23 assists against Western New Mexico.

For St. Edward's, the matchup calls for the patience to build another attack after Rojo extends a rally and the variety to keep TWU's block from settling on one option. GISELLE OJEDA, sixth in the LSC with 4.34 digs per set, will be central to giving Morris those additional opportunities. The Hilltoppers' serving can also help limit the Pioneers' options before their offense develops.

DBU enters the week 12-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play, with an 8-1 home record. The Patriots have surpassed their ninth-place preseason projection, ranking second in the LSC in hitting percentage (.242), kills per set (13.30), and service aces per set (2.00).

Karly Wells leads the attack with 3.70 kills per set, third in the conference, and just ahead of Fording. Reagan Fifer provides an efficient complementary option, ranking eighth in hitting percentage at .323. Aizlyn Dewberry adds a defensive presence at the net with 1.04 blocks per set, third in the league, while freshman libero Olivia Clayton averages 3.92 digs.

Zoe Gun contributes 5.79 assists per set and ranks second in the LSC with 0.47 aces per set. The setter earned consecutive conference weekly honors in September, helping direct an attack with enough options to punish predictable defensive coverage.

Western New Mexico interrupted DBU's eight-match winning streak last week, holding the Patriots to one set while hitting .301, the highest percentage DBU had allowed this season. The result gives St. Edward's a clear plan: keep its own attack alive through quality passing, then make DBU defend multiple hitters. The Patriots rebounded with a sweep of Sul Ross State.

The Hilltoppers have spent much of the season showing how explosive their offense can be. Last weekend supplied another glimpse of what happens when serving, passing, and distribution work together. Sustaining that connection through TWU's longer rallies and DBU's service pressure would give St. Edward's a chance to turn renewed rhythm into another productive conference weekend.
