EDMOND, Okla. — St. Edward's kept the offense rolling and the pressure on Oklahoma Christian on Saturday, sweeping a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with a pair of gritty wins — rallying for a 6-5 extra-inning victory before pulling away for a 10-5 win in the nightcap to set up a chance at a four-game sweep on Sunday.
The Hilltoppers had to grind out the opener, leaning on timely power early and late-game execution to outlast the Eagles.
St. Edward's jumped ahead in the second inning when
AUSTIN PAGE crushed a three-run home run to right field, scoring
TREVOR SEBEK and
DAWSON STUTZ to stake the Hilltoppers to a 3-0 lead.
Oklahoma Christian answered with a four-run bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a pair of defensive miscues to briefly flip the game. The Hilltoppers responded in the fourth when
KADE NATHMAN tied the game with a solo shot to left, resetting the contest and restoring the momentum.
The Eagles edged back in front in the bottom of the fourth, but St. Edward's answered again in the fifth when
DYLAN TATE reached on an error and eventually scored on
CONNOR COX's RBI groundout to knot the game at 5–5.
With the game deadlocked deep into the afternoon, the Hilltoppers manufactured the decisive run in the eighth. Nathman ignited the rally with a single and swiped second before
TREVOR SEBEK worked a walk, setting the table for Stutz, who ripped an RBI single up the middle to plate Nathman and give St. Edward's the lead.
That was enough for the bullpen.
FINN MIGNEREY, who entered in the fifth inning, shut down Oklahoma Christian over the final 3.2 innings, stranding multiple baserunners to lock down the 6-5 win despite the Eagles piling up 16 hits.
If the opener was a grind, the nightcap started with an avalanche.
St. Edward's erupted for five runs in the second inning, turning patience and pressure into instant offense.
DAVID RIPPLE and Nathman reached to start the rally before Sebek was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A passed ball brought home the first run before Page delivered a two-run single and Cox followed with a two-run double to left-center to push the Hilltoppers ahead 5-0.
The Hilltoppers kept the line moving in the third, where Nathman scored on a
DAWSON STUTZ sacrifice fly and later came home again on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 7-2.
Oklahoma Christian pushed back with a three-run fourth inning, trimming the deficit to 8-5 on Tanner Forbus' three-run double, but St. Edward's answered immediately to keep the game firmly in its control.
Nathman sparked another rally in the fifth with a single before Sebek ripped an RBI double down the left-field line. Page followed with his third RBI of the game on a single to left-center, stretching the Hilltoppers' advantage to 10-5.
Nathman finished the nightcap with two hits and three runs scored, while Sebek crossed the plate three times and swiped two bases. Page drove in three runs, and Cox added a two-run double as St. Edward's piled up 10 runs on 10 hits.
BRANDON HUFF earned the win in Game 2 with five innings of work and five strikeouts, while
GRAYSON SMITH closed the final two innings to secure the doubleheader sweep.
With the pair of wins, the Hilltoppers improved to 18-6 overall and in Lone Star Conference play, carrying their offensive momentum into Sunday's series finale with a chance to finish off the four-game sweep after Friday's 28-run outburst.
