St. Edward’s Defeats Western New Mexico 83-71 in NCAA Tournament Opener

DALLAS — Two Hilltoppers on opposite ends of their collegiate careers made their NCAA Tournament debuts Saturday night, marking the culmination of one era of St. Edward's basketball and the beginning of another with an 83-71 win over Western New Mexico in the NCAA Regional Quarterfinals.

Senior point forward BLAKE NIELSEN spent most of his career setting up teammates for success, defining the Hilltopper offense for the first half of this decade and etching his name in the record books as the program's all-time assists leader.

In his first NCAA Tournament game, Nielsen called his own number down the stretch to finish it — hitting a sidestep, off-balance three-pointer to extend the lead to 14 in the final two minutes, punctuating his game-high 21 points with an exclamation mark.

The victory was Nielsen's first postseason win, thanks in no small part to freshman RYDER BRADLEY.

If Nielsen was the punctuation, St. Edward's All-LSC Freshman of the Year point guard was an open-ended ellipsis, setting the tone with poise beyond his years while offering a glimpse of endless potential.

Bradley opened the game by hitting JAMISON KAY for a three-pointer, then finding CONOR MCMANUS on the perimeter, controlling the tempo early and guiding St. Edward's through a back-and-forth first half against a Western New Mexico team that had beaten the Hilltoppers twice during the regular season.

Attacking with confidence, Bradley scored from all three levels while orchestrating the offense with crisp ball movement and transition pushes that kept St. Edward's a step ahead, helping the Hilltoppers take a 39-37 halftime lead behind 14 of his 19 points and four assists.

Western New Mexico used its length to stay within arm's reach, pulling down 11 offensive rebounds in the first half while feeding guard Cortaviaus Seals for nine points on six shots.

The second half opened with the same tension that defined the first 20 minutes, the teams trading buckets until a perimeter spark erupted into separation for the Hilltoppers.

MASON COURTNEY drilled a three-pointer from the wing, and moments later Nielsen followed with a deep three of his own to stretch the lead to 55-48, igniting a 9-2 run that put St. Edward's firmly back in control.

With the Mustangs scrambling to respond, Bradley delivered another key sequence, knocking down a three-pointer before slicing through the lane for a driving layup that pushed the lead to 60-53.

Western New Mexico refused to go quietly.

Quincy Adams caught fire with a pair of three-pointers and scored 14 second-half points, while forward Andre Harris provided the interior counterbalance with nine points and seven rebounds after halftime. Harris set up Kelly for a three-pointer that pulled the Mustangs within four with nine minutes remaining.

Nielsen answered immediately — a floater, two free throws and a driving layup to steady the Hilltopper offense.

Kay added two interior baskets, and Bradley found McManus for a three-pointer that stretched the lead back to 11 with four minutes remaining.

Kay served as the connective tissue between St. Edward's two primary playmakers, quietly stitching the offense together all night — screening, facilitating, crashing the glass and taking on secondary ball-handling duties to relieve pressure from Nielsen and Bradley.

He controlled the middle of the floor early in the half while Bradley kept the offense humming with aggressive drives and sharp passing. Nielsen then took over the closing act, scoring in transition, drawing contact at the rim and ultimately delivering the dagger three-pointer that sent the Hilltopper bench into celebration.

St. Edward's shot 47 percent from the field and buried 13 three-pointers, using its pace and perimeter shooting to wear down the Mustangs over the final 10 minutes.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Hilltoppers had finally solved a familiar Lone Star Conference rival — earning their first win over Western New Mexico in three meetings this season and advancing to the NCAA Regional Semifinals.

For Nielsen, it was the long-awaited NCAA Tournament debut that capped years of leadership.

For Bradley, it was the first chapter of what could become many postseason moments on the Hilltop.

And for St. Edward's, it was a performance that showcased the program's past, present and future all on the same stage.

The Hilltoppers will face host DBU on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the regional semifinal.
