LAREDO, Texas — A weekend series that had already gone to extra innings twice in the first three games came down to the wire again in Sunday's finale, with Texas A&M International delivering its second walk-off of the series to split the four-game set.
BEN MERRIMAN jump-started the Hilltoppers in the first with a leadoff double, and
DYLAN TATE followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch brought home the game's first run.
St. Edward's stretched the lead in the third behind
KADE NATHMAN, who capped a stellar weekend with a two-RBI double to left. Jacob Schofield followed with an RBI single, and
AUSTIN PAGE added an RBI double to left-center to push the advantage to 5-0. Nathman finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Texas A&M International answered with two outs in the bottom of the third, using an RBI double from Asahi Nakano and a miscue behind the plate to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Hilltoppers created more separation in the fifth. Jacob Bullcroft led off with a double, Tate followed with a single, and Schofield brought in a run with a groundout. Nathman later scored on a passed ball to extend the lead.
Momentum swung in the middle innings. St. Edward's issued two walks and hit a batter to load the bases in the fifth, and the Dustdevils capitalized with three runs on an RBI single, a wild pitch, and a groundout to pull within one. They took the lead in the sixth on Giovanni Malatesta's RBI single and another run-scoring wild pitch.
St. Edward's answered with execution in the eighth.
GRAYSON DOGGETT drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and moved to third on
TREVOR SEBEK's bunt single before Merriman lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The late swings continued. Eddie Saenz gave the Dustdevils the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, but Bullcroft responded in the ninth with a game-tying solo shot.
Texas A&M International had the final answer. A leadoff walk and back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases, and Eduardo Espinoza lined a walk-off single to left to seal the 10-9 win.
St. Edward's drops to 24-17 after a series that saw the Hilltoppers out-hit the Dustdevils and generate consistent traffic on the bases, finishing with 54 hits and a .346 team average across the four games.
The Hilltoppers return home next weekend to host Texas A&M-Kingsville, with first pitch in Friday's opener set for 2 p.m.
