St. Edward’s men’s basketball head coach Andre Cook is widely regarded as one of the most innovative offensive minds in NCAA Division II, building the Hilltoppers into one of the Lone Star Conference’s most distinctive and consistently successful programs.

Under Cook, St. Edward’s has consistently ranked among the conference leaders in assists, turnover margin, and offensive efficiency, regardless of roster construction. His system has produced NCAA Tournament teams built around drastically different players in the explosive scoring of shooting guard Ashton Spears ’20, the 2019 Heartland Conference Player of the Year, the dynamic playmaking of versatile point forward Blake Nielsen ’26, the program’s all-time assists leader, and the traditional post scoring of all-conference center Lewis Rowe ’25 and point guard Gavino Ramos ‘25.

Cook’s innovation and adaptability across 17 seasons have produced the most sustained era of success for men’s basketball at the Hilltop.

Now the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories, Cook also owns the school record for NCAA Tournament wins. He has guided the Hilltoppers to four NCAA Tournament appearances, two conference regular-season championships, and consecutive postseason berths in 2025 and 2026, establishing St. Edward’s as one of the South Central Region’s most consistent winners.

Cook’s recruiting acumen has produced multiple conference Freshman and Newcomer of the Year award winners since 2019, while his player development process has yielded eight all-region seasons and 46 all-conference selections.

In 2019, CollegeInsider.com recognized Cook as its National Coach of the Year after leading the Hilltoppers to one of the finest seasons in program history. He also earned Region and Heartland Conference Coach of the Year honors that season and has received multiple National Coach of the Week awards during his tenure on the Hilltop.

The discipline, professionalism, and accountability Cook instills in his players have produced two Academic Player of the Year awards, multiple NABC Team Academic Excellence honors, and eight Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team selections. His holistic approach to development has prepared student-athletes for careers in fields ranging from finance to medicine, while also helping players earn professional basketball contracts in Australia and Europe and launching a growing coaching tree at both the high school and collegiate levels.

Cook earned his bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College, where he scored more than 1,000 career points as a four-year standout. He later received his master’s degree from Union College and began his coaching career at Hudson Falls High School, serving as both a teacher and assistant principal.

Before arriving at St. Edward’s, Cook built a successful program at Hudson Valley Community College, earning Region III Coach of the Year and BCANY Junior College Coach of the Year honors. He resides in Austin with his wife, Stacey, and children, Emily and Colin.
