St. Edward’s women’s basketball head coach J.J. Riehl is the consummate Hilltopper, spending more than two decades building the program she once starred in as a student-athlete.

A four-year player at St. Edward’s University, Riehl immediately transitioned into coaching following a decorated playing career, joining the Hilltoppers’ staff as an assistant coach before landing the head coaching job.

When Riehl took over the program in 2012, she built her vision around the culture, competitiveness, servant leadership, and family atmosphere that shaped her own experience on the Hilltop, carrying those values forward for future generations of Hilltoppers.

Now entering her 15th season as head coach, Riehl is the longest-tenured coach in program history and ranks second all-time in career wins. As a player, she helped lead St. Edward’s to a conference championship and NAIA Tournament appearance. As a head coach, she has guided the Hilltoppers to two conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances while earning Heartland Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2017.

After climbing the coaching ladder herself, Riehl extended it for others, building a coaching staff that includes St. Edward’s alumnae Khiani Clark, Shakera Barnes, and graduate assistant Mikah Chapman.
That foundation of institutional knowledge has helped produce two All-Americans, 31 All-Conference selections, and multiple conference award winners. Her recruiting acumen has also led to conference Newcomer of the Year honors in both the Heartland and Lone Star Conferences.

More importantly, Riehl’s holistic approach to student-athlete development has prepared young women for success long after their playing careers, including careers in NBA front offices, collegiate coaching, education, and other professional fields.
Those lifelong connections have fostered a culture of mentorship and giveback that continues to enhance the student-athlete experience. Under Riehl, the program has traveled to destinations such as Hawaii, Colorado, Canada, and Puerto Rico while also prioritizing service within the Austin community.
That commitment to service includes mentorship programs with local elementary schools and the annual Travis Heights Elementary game, which fills the RAC with young students each December and reflects the program’s emphasis on leadership beyond basketball.
Riehl earned her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2002 before completing her Master of Human Services with a concentration in Sports Management in 2004, both from St. Edward’s University. During her playing career, she was a three-year starter, two-time team captain, and all-conference honoree.
