Box Score AUSTIN , Texas -The 12 th-ranked St. Edward's men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Heartland Conference rival Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon at the SEU Soccer Field.
In the first half, both teams had numerous chances with St. Edward's (11-3, 5-1 HC) taking nine shots compared to eight shots for Incarnate Word (8-5, 3-1 HC).
In the second half, the Hilltoppers received a break in the 74 thminute when the Cardinals' Jeff Boyer was whistled for a foul and was sent off with a red card. However, Incarnate Word, playing a man down, was able to still put pressure on the Hilltoppers. In the 78 thminute Incarnate Word defender Jamie Scope put a header past St. Edward's goalkeeper Matt Moore. Troy Thompson received an assist on the play as he sent the cornerkick into the box.
From there, St. Edward's pushed forward and put a lot of chances on net but Cardinal goalkeeper Gil Ben Nachem was equal to the test, preserving the shutout. Junior Kevin Klaus had the best chance as he got behind the Incarnate Word defense and put a header on net, but Nachem was there to make the save.
Incarnate Word outshot the Hilltoppers, 18-15, and put 10 shots on goal compared to six shots on goal for St. Edward's. Moore tallied nine saves for the Hilltoppers while Nachem produced six saves.
St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they host #2 Midwestern State. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field. Midwestern State is ranked first in the South Central Region.
