Box Score ODESSA, Texas -The #17 St. Edward's men's soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating UT-Permian Basin, 4-1, Friday afternoon at the UTPB Soccer Field.
UT-Permian Basin (7-9-4, 1-6-2 HC) got on the board first in the 14 thminute when Luis Paiva scored on a breakaway. He one-timed it past Hilltopper goalkeeper Matt Moore. Zac Enriquez received an assist on the play.
St. Edward's (12-4, 6-1 HC) was held in check for almost the entire first half until 15 seconds before the halftime. The Falcons were whistled for a foul in the box and Patrick Miller put away the penalty kick to knot the score at halftime.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers turned it on. Junior John Calandro tallied two goals in span of four minutes right after halftime. The midfielder scored on a breakaway in the 49 thminute on a pass from sophomore Jorge Vega. Calandro notched his second goal of the match as the Falcons were again whistled for a foul in their own box in the 53 rdminute. Freshman Ricardo Gasca capped off the scoring in the 89 thminute, scoring his first goal in a St. Edward's uniform. Miller and junior Brandin Parras were credited with assists on the play.
The Hilltoppers outshot UT-Permian Basin, 22-11.
St. Edward's will be back in action Sunday when they travel to take on Newman. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. in Wichita, Kan. The Hilltoppers went to overtime with the Jets in Austin, before winning on a golden goal earlier this season.
