Box Score TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The St. Edward's men's soccer team dropped a 7-2 decision to Northeastern State Sunday afternoon at the Riverhawk Soccer Pitch.
Northeastern State (8-6) got on the scoreboard first in the 24th minute when they were credited with a goal for an own goal against the Hilltoppers. The Riverhawks would add two more goals within two minutes of each other. Sambo Claros scored in the 38th minute from 18 yards out on a pass from Cory Schmeling.
Two minutes later Sam Vernalis scored to make the score, 3-0. St. Edward's (5-7-2) cut into the lead just before halftime when junior Trey Perkins scored on a cross by senior Kevin Klaus to make the score, 3-1.
The Hilltoppers struck again in the early part of the second half when senior Scott Strickland beat the Riverhawk goalkeeper one-on-one in the 50th minute. It was his ninth goal in his last seven games. Senior Bryan VanCura was credited with the assist on the play. Northeastern State would then counter that with a goal in the 52nd minute by Andre Hernandez off of a free kick.
The Riverhawks would tack on three more goals down the stretch for the final margin. Both teams had 17 shots each, but Northeastern State had the advantage in shots on goal with 14 compared to just nine for the Hilltoppers.
St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they host Newman. Kick off is set for 4 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field.
