Hilltoppers gain first win of the season, defeat UT-Permian Basin, 2-0

Box Score ODESSA, Texas - The St. Edward's men's soccer team finally got into the win column for the 2009 season and it couldn't have come soon enough as the Hilltoppers picked up a road victory over Heartland Conference member Texas-Permian Basin, 2-0, Friday afternoon at the UTPB Soccer Field.

After playing seven of its first eight matches against ranked teams, St. Edward's (1-6-2, 1-1 HC) not only played an unranked team but they got back to Heartland Conference play against UT-Permian Basin (2-6-1, 0-4 HC). Neither team was able to score in the first 40 minutes, but just before halftime, junior Josh Nannen got behind the Falcon defense and dribbled around the UT-Permian Basin goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

In the second half, the Hilltoppers wasted no time as St. Edward's was fouled in the box during the 47th minute. Senior Scott Strickland calmly stepped up and knocked the penalty kick into the back of the net for a 2-0 Hilltopper lead.

The Falcons tried to respond, but the two shots they did put on net down the stretch were turned away by St. Edward's goalkeeper Matt Moore.

St. Edward's outshot UT-Permian Basin, 15-10, and had nine cornerkicks compared to just one for the Falcons.

St. Edward's will continue its road trip when they travel to Wichita, Kan. To take on Heartland Conference rival Newman. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
