Williams debut a success, Hilltoppers tie number 13 Colorado School of Mines

Matt Moore
Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Junior Joeski Williams picked a good time for his debut as he scored to lead St. Edward's to a 1-1 draw versus #13 Colorado School of Mines Sunday morning. This was day two of the Heartland/Rocky Mountain Conference Challenge. Sunday's matches were moved from Austin to Incarnate Word because of wet field conditions.

St. Edward's (0-3-1) got on the board early when senior John Calandro sent a long ball ahead for Williams. He then sent a shot far side from 15 yards out past a diving Oredigger goalkeeper. This was the first match that Williams has played this season.

Colorado-Mines (4-0-2) got back in the game in the 27 thminute when Phillip Wilson sent a cross in the box from 25 yards out and Alex Gunberg sent a header past Hilltopper goalkeeper Matt Moore to knot the score, 1-1.

Both teams would pepper the goal areas with shots but each goalkeeper was equal to the task. Williams took a game-high eight shots.

St. Edward's outshot the Orediggers, 16-14, but Colorado School of Mines had nine shots on goal compared to just four for the Hilltoppers.

At the start of the second overtime, Brian Lacinski received his second yellow of the match and the Orediggers were forced to play the final 10 minutes a man down.

St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they host Eastern New Mexico. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field.
