AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's men's soccer team played hard against Eastern New Mexico this Sunday afternoon as they tied 1-1 at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
In the first half, neither St. Edward's (3-5-1) nor Eastern New Mexico (4-2-4) could find the back of the net. By the end of the first half the Hilltoppers had earned five cornerkicks to the Greyhounds one and had multiple attacks on goal. The Greyhounds had outshot the Hilltoppers, 6-3.
In the second half, St. Edward's started to turn on up the heat taking the first three shots of the half. In the 65th minute the Hilltoppers would get a free kick setting them up for the first goal of the match.
Hilltoppers' Bryan Booth (Senior, Colleyville, Texas) took the free kick from the far side of the field, JR Ellis (Junior, Coppell, Texas) got his head on the ball sending it to the back post where Coleton Stymeist (Freshman, Dallas, Texas) was waiting alone. Stymeist got a head on it and sent it flying into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
Feeding off the energy from the goal the Hilltoppers kept the pressure on and stayed on the attack taking two more shots before the Greyhounds were able to take their first of the half.
In the 90th minute Greyhounds Julian Roberts would get a free kick and would curve the ball in, tying up the match. The game would then go into overtime.
In the 96th minute Ellis would get a head on the ball sending it into the net but would get the off-sides call keeping the match tied.
Ellis would try again during the second overtime, in the 108th minute, beating the keeper one-on-one but would again get the off-sides call, ending the match in a draw.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday when they travel to take on Newman. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Wichita, Kan. Live stats will be available on the Newman Athletic Website.
