2012 St. Edward's Men's Soccer Action
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's men's soccer team improved to 6-3-2 on the season with a 2-0 win against Newman on Thursday afternoon. The Hilltoppers remain atop the Heartland Conference with a 4-1-1-conference record.

Hilltopper midfielder ANDERSON MCDANIEL put St. Edward's on the board during the 31st minute of play. McDaniel capitalized on a 25-yard free kick that sailed over the wall of Newman defenders to find the back of the net. This was McDaniel's second goal of the season.

St. Edward's had two other opportunities to build its lead during the first half. ANDREW FOX connected on a header, but was denied by Jets goalie Robin Allard. KESTON SMITH also had the opportunity to knock in a header but it floated high over the post. The Hilltoppers controlled the first half with aggressive play and outshooting Newman 7-1.

Seven minutes into the second half of play, DANIEL RILEY guided his header to the near post to beat the Jets goalkeeper. The assist came from McDaniel off of a corner kick. This was Riley's seventh goal of the season.

The Hilltoppers controlled the pace of play once again in the second half. They were able to attempt eight shots, while their defense only allowed two. St. Edward's goalie JOHN KASCHAK continues his success between the pipes. He saw a total of three shots, and made a save to record his seventh shutout of the season.

Head coach Brian Young was satisfied with his team's effort and commented after the game. “We need to do a better job defending from the start. I was pleased with our runs and services on our free kicks as well with keeping the ball. We aim to be better against Oklahoma Christian.”

The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Heartland Conference newcomer Oklahoma Christian. Kick-off is set for 2:30 pm at Louis-Chen Family Field on the St. Edward's campus. Live stats and video will be available through the Hilltopper website.
