AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's men's soccer team defeated St. Mary's 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Battle of the Saints. The Hilltoppers are 10-3-2 on the season and currently sit atop the Heartland Conference standings at 6-1-1. The Hilltoppers have gone 10 straight games without a loss which last occurred on September 20
th.
St. Edward's controlled this match against the St. Mary's Rattlers from the onset. The Hilltoppers outshot the Rattlers, 24-5 during the contest. The Hilltoppers first shot of the match came in the third minute when
KESTON SMITH sent a shot that sailed high. In the 16
th minute
JAMES MARTIN had a shot that was saved by St. Mary's goalkeeper Patrick Kasperitis. Seconds later
DANIEL RILEY had a header attempt that was also saved by Kasperitis. In the 33
rd minute, the Hilltoppers had attempts by Martin and
SAM BURNS that were both blocked by the Rattler defense.
The Hilltoppers finally found the back of the net in the 36
th minute. Riley beat the keeper to the far post off an assist from
ANDERSON MCDANIEL. This was Riley's team leading 10
th goal of the season.
Before the end of the first half, freshman
TIM LAGRIMAS would take three shots in a span of three minutes. Lagrimas had his shot in the 40
th minute blocked and his header in the 42
nd minute was saved by Kasperitis. The half would end with St. Edward's leading 1-0
In the second half, the Hilltoppers would continue to attack the goal. St. Edward's took four shots in the first seven minutes of the half including Riley's shot in the 48
th minute that was saved by Kasperitis. Kasperitis had a total of eight saves for the match.
In the 55
th minute, the Hilltoppers would make it 2-0.
ANDREW FOX scored off an assist from
JAMES MARTIN. Fox is second on the team with eight goals on the year.
Two yellow cards were called during the second half. In the 69
th minute, St. Mary's Zach Strater was handed a card. Burns of the Hilltoppers was given a card in the 81
st minute.
In the 82
nd minute, St. Edward's would take a 3-0 lead.
KYLE RUCK beat Kasperitis off the second assist of the match by
JAMES MARTIN. This was Ruck's first goal on the year.
“We had great energy from the first whistle and it continued throughout the whole match,” said head coach
Brian Young. “The guys are playing really good soccer and their high work rate allowed for many chances to score as well as earning the shutout.”
St. Edward's will be back in action on Saturday when they host Texas A&M International. Action will begin at 2:30. The winner of this match will be in first place in the Heartland Conference standings.
