Box Score DENTON, Texas – The St. Edward's volleyball team suffered a four-set, nonconference loss Thursday night to Texas Woman's, 25-23, 25-27, 25-7, and 25-23.
St. Edward's (15-8) started off strong in the first set with the help of kills from
REBECCA SCHNABEL and Ale'tra Ware and four errors by Texas Woman's (20-6) to give the Hilltoppers the early lead, 6-2. St. Edward's continued to add to its lead as miscues from the Pioneers gave the Hilltoppers the advantage, 12-5. Texas Woman's gained a slight momentum as an 8-2 run put the Pioneers within one, 14-13. St. Edward's looked to take the set with a late run, but Texas Woman's would hold on. Down by one, 23-22, the Pioneers rallied behind a kill from Torie Talkington and two Hilltopper errors to win set one, 25-23.
The two teams continued to battle back and forth into the second set. No team was able to put together a long rally as both defenses held off the other as they exchanged leads. With the set tied at 18-18, three kills from
MARY KOEHLER sparked a 4-1 run that hoped to give the Hilltoppers the late advantage, 22-19. After a quick Pioneer kill, Schnabel and Ware came through with back-to-back kills putting St. Edward's at set-point, 24-20. A quick timeout by Texas Woman's regained its focus, but was unable to overcome the Hilltopper offense. The set ended by a kill from
MEREDITH BARD, as St. Edward's won, 27-25.
The Pioneers took charge with an overwhelming lead in the third set, 16-0. St. Edward's looked to chip away at Texas Woman's lead slowly, but was unsuccessful as the Pioneers continued to pound on the points. Texas Woman's took the set, 25-7 stunning the Hilltopper offense.
St. Edward's tried to regain composure in the fourth set, but the Pioneers jumped to a 4-1 lead with the help of two service aces from Chloe' Tate. A kill from Bard set up a strong 7-1 run for the Hilltoppers as they took the lead, 8-5. The momentum began to gravitate towards St. Edward's as both teams traded short rallies with the Hilltoppers keeping Texas Woman's in close watch. The Pioneers worked slowly inching their way back into the lead. With St. Edward's up by three, 20-17, Talkington led Texas Woman's on a 6-3 run to tie the set, 23-23. After a quick timeout by the Hilltoppers, back-to-back kills from the Pioneers ended St. Edward's dash for the fourth set victory as Texas Woman's won, 25-23.
Koehler led the attack for the Hilltoppers hitting .517 with 15 kills and
ELISSA STANTON behind her hitting .400 and tallying nine kills.
LOREN KELLY collected a team-high 27 assists and
MICHELLE HUNDT finished with 28 digs.
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday as they travel to Goodwell, Okla. to continue conference play against Panhandle State at noon. Live video will be available on the Aggie Athletic Website.
