Cold shooting dooms Hilltoppers in 60-52 loss to Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The St. Edward's men's basketball team dropped its second-straight contest as it shot 25 percent from the field in a 60-52 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville at Hampton Inn Court Tuesday evening.
 
TAMU-Kingsville (2-1) opened the gamed on a 10-2 run as St. Edward's (3-3) missed its first seven shots from the field and turned the ball over twice to give the Javelinas the advantage.
 
The Hilltoppers would score seven of the next eight points to cut the TAMU-Kingsville lead to 11-9 with 13:12 left in the first half. SHIMEEK JOHNSON and JOHN RUTHERFORD both hit three-pointers during the stretch.
 
The Javelinas would end the first half on a 17-6 run holding the Hilltoppers to a dismal 13 percent shooting. St. Edward's was also 4-for-9 from the free-throw line as they trailed 28-15 at the break.
 
In the second half, Johnson opened with a three-point play on the Hilltoppers' first possession and sparked the visitors into scoring the half's first seven points to cut the lead to 28-22 at the 16:29 mark.
 
Over the next nine minutes, TAMU-Kingsville embarked on a 21-9 spurt and broke out to its biggest lead of the night, 49-31. Rashad Basey tallied nine points to lead the way for the Javelinas.
 
Then St. Edward's would rally, outscoring TAMU-Kingsville, 20-5 over the next five minutes to close the gap to three points with 2:13 on the clock. TYLER FOSTER nailed a three-pointer that ended the rally. That would be last bucket St. Edward's would score as it missed its final two shots and turned the ball over once more.
 
Johnson led the Hilltoppers with 15 points, while CHRIS WACKER added seven points and eight rebounds. HARLEY NUSSMAN registered six points and seven rebounds.
 
Basey led the Javelinas with 14 points, while Marshall Bonds and Adam Mughmaw both scored 11 points.
 
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on Incarnate Word. Tip-off set for 4 p.m. at the McDermott Center in San Antonio. Live Video and Stats will be available on the Cardinal Athletic Website.
