AUSTIN, Texas – Gaining her first start of the season, forward Erica Rousculp responded with a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead St. Edward's to a 67-49 victory over cross-town rival Concordia Tuesday evening at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
St. Edward's (3-2) scored the first seven points of the game in the first three minutes. MADDIE WHEELER nailed a three-pointer that came between buckets by DAWN KIEL and Rousculp.
Tyler Compton would get Concordia (2-1) on the scoreboard at the 17:08 mark, but the Hilltoppers kept things rolling, coming back with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes. The home team forced the Tornados into five turnovers during that span, while Wheeler started the run with a layup, and capped it off with two free throws. The spurt gave St. Edward's a 21-4 lead with 11:58 remaining in the opening half.
Concordia fought back with an 8-1 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to 22-12. Katherine Frost and Jessie Pittman both hit three pointers during the comeback attempt.
The Hilltoppers countered with a 12-5 run to end the first half. VALENCIA WHITE sparked the run by hitting to baseline jumpers as she came in to the game. The run gave St. Edward's a 34-17 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers quickly put the game away with a 17-3 run in the first seven minutes. Kiel was the catalyst, registering eight points during the decisive stanza, while CASEY RILEY ended the run with a trey. St. Edward's would coast from there as they took home its second-straight victory.
Rousculp was 6-for-7 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe for her 14 points. Three of her 11 boards came on the offensive end. Kiel also finished with 14 points, while Wheeler added 10 points and a game-high three steals. Both Riley and STEPHANIE DEKKERS led St. Edward's with four assists each.
St. Edward's will be back in action Sunday when they host Harding. Tip-off set for 2 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Live Video and Stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
