AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's men's soccer team finished the regular season on a high note on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Dallas Baptist at Lewis-Chen Family Field. With the win, the Hilltoppers finished in first place in the Heartland Conference. This was their fifth conference title and first since 2009.
St. Edward's (12-3-3, 7-1-2 HC) was on the attack early in the match with four shots on goal within the first 10 minutes of action. In the 16
th minute, the Hilltoppers would find the back of the net when
DANIEL RILEY used a give-and-go with
KYLE RUCK to score his 12
th goal of the season.
St. Edward's would strike again less than three minutes later. Again it was Riley who did the honors. Riley received a long pass from
KARL DEZOETEN and then dribbled around the keeper and sent the ball in for his 13
th goal. In the final minute of the half, goalkeeper
JOHN KASCHAK made the save on a header attempt by Dallas Baptist's Ryan Jackson.
In the second half, St. Edward's would outshoot the Patriots 14-3. In the 50
th minute,
GAVIN BRUCE had a shot blocked by the Patriot defense.
ANDERSON MCDANIEL had his shot in the 60
th minute hit the crossbar. In the 64
th minute, David Balyeat of the Patriots had his shot blocked by the Hilltoppers defense.
In the 72
nd minute,
JAMES MARTIN sent a pass ahead to
KYLE RUCK who dribbled around the goalkeeper and put the ball into the empty net. Ruck's goal gave the Hilltoppers a 3-0 lead.
ANDREW FOX came close to extending the lead in the 77
th minute, but his shot was saved by the Patriots goalkeeper Chuck Schober. Fox came close again in the 88
th minute when his header attempt hit the post. Fox would take a total of six shots in the match but was unable to find the net.
“I am very happy for the players and the staff who have worked so hard to keep our 13-game unbeaten streak alive and for winning the Heartland Conference Championship,” said head coach
Brian Young following the game. “Hopefully the NCAA finds our body of work convincing enough to award us an at-large bid. We will have to wait until Monday to find out.”
