WICHITA, Kan. – The St. Edward's men's basketball team fell to an undefeated Newman squad, 89-70, Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium.

Newman (8-0, 1-0 HC) opened the game with a 16-10 lead in the first six minutes of action. Ryan McCarthy had the hot hand early for the Jets as he accounted for eight points during the opening run.

The lead grew to nine points at the 11:24 mark when Marquis Cuyler hit a three-pointer to make it, 22-13, but St. Edward's (4-5, 0-2 HC) responded by scoring eight of the next nine points to cut the lead to two, 23-21, with 9:40 remaining. JEFF CAMPBELL hit a three pointer and SHIMEEK JOHNSON notched an old-fashioned three-point play.

After a trey by Johnson at the 7:15 mark cut the Jet lead to one, 29-28, Newman would go on a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to increase the lead to double-digits, 43-32, with 4:12 remaining in the opening half.

A three-pointer by Trae Beck with four seconds left in the half gave Newman a 48-39 lead at the break. St. Edward's outshot the Jets by making 52 percent of its shots from the floor compared to 37 percent for Newman, but the home team made 10 more free throws to make up the difference and then some.

In the second half, St. Edward's owned the first nine minutes. The Hilltoppers went on a 16-8 run to open up play. FRANKIE MGBOLU, who earned his first career start, had two buckets during the run and QUINTON LILLEY capped off the run with a three-point play with 11:26 remaining to cut the deficit to 58-57.

The momentum was short-lived as the Jets fought back by scoring the next 13 points. Beck nailed two shots from behind the arc to start the rally and Newman never looked back.

Johnson led the Hilltoppers with 20 points, while CHRIS WACKER tallied 11 points, and JAMES STUKES added 10 points.

Newman's Beck led all scorers with 21 points, while four other players finished in double-figures for the Jets.

St. Edward's will be back in action Tuesday when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website. The Javelinas bested the Hilltoppers earlier this season in Kingsville, 60-52.
