AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's volleyball team closed out the Hilltopper-Rattler Classic Saturday with another split, sweeping Midwestern State in three sets, 25-20, 25-18, and 25-21, then falling to #15 Angelo State in three, 25-17, 25-15, and 25-18.
In the first set against Midwestern State (1-2), St. Edward's (2-2) had to work from behind allowing the Mustangs to take advantage of short rallies to pull ahead 17-12. Down by five, the Hilltoppers had four-consecutive kills that sparked an 8-1 run to take their first lead in the set, 20-18. St. Edward's was able to hold on to its lead as they went on the win the set, 25-20.
The Hilltoppers found themselves having to come back early within set two, but never lost the lead after the 5-5 tie. Short rallies by St. Edward's added to its lead keeping the Mustangs at a distance. Up in the set 17-15, a kill by Hilltopper
COURTNEY TREVINO and four errors by Midwestern State gave St. Edward's enough momentum to coast to a 25-18 victory in set two.
In the final set against the Mustangs, the Hilltoppers came out strong, taking a commanding lead of 13-5 with seven kills in the rally. Midwestern State looked to answer back with a short four-point run of its own but the lead proved too much for the Mustangs. With St. Edward's up 24-21, a kill by
MARY KOEHLER would close out the match for the Hilltoppers.
Leaders for St. Edward's were Koehler with 10 kills and
MICHELLE HUNDT contributed 24 digs.
AMY JONES tallied 19 assists and two service aces.
In their final match of the tournament, the Hilltoppers fell to Angelo State in three sets.
For the first set the two teams traded kills early on but the Rambelles were able to capitalize on errors from St. Edward's and took the lead, 6-3. The Hilltoppers battled point-for-point with Angelo State throughout the set but the Rambelles held on to their lead and won the set, 25-17.
St. Edward's came out in the second set looking to take an early lead to hold off Angelo State but was withheld by the Rambelle offense. Down 10-7, Hilltopper
MEREDITH BARD put up two kills before tournament kill leader Shelbi Goode responded with a kill of her own keeping St. Edward's to any long rallies. Angelo State went on to take the set, 25-15.
The Rambelles took control again in the third set and put themselves ahead 13-9 with the help of four kills by Goode.
ELISSA STANTON hoped to spark a rally with a kill of her own but Goode came through to start a seven point run giving Angelo State a commanding 20-10 lead. With the Hilltoppers down 24-14, four errors by the Rambelles kept St. Edward's in the game until a kill by Maddie Huth ended the match, 25-18.

MARY MCNAMARA tallied 16 assists with nine digs. Hundt collect 22 digs and led the tournament in digs per set with 7.80.
Angelo State's offense was led by Goode and Huth with 19 and 13 kills, respectively. Alex Woolsey finished with 41 assists and 25 digs.
St. Edward's will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Laredo to take on TAMU-International at 7 p.m.
