#17 Hilltoppers blitz #9 Dallas Baptist, 5-1 in a matchup of heavyweights

Olivia Collado
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – In what was supposed to be a matchup of two of the best teams in the South Central Region, turned in to a rout late as #17 St. Edward's defeated #9 Dallas Baptist, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Field.

VIDEO RECAP

In the early stages of the game, Dallas Baptist (4-2, 0-1 HC) looked as if they would take a lead within the first minute of play when they had a free kick just outside of the St. Edward's box. The ball was sent towards goal and fell to the feet of Danielle Presley just near the goal line. Her point blank shot was saved by Hilltopper goalkeeper DANIELLE LICARIONE to keep the Patriots off of the board.

St. Edward's (5-0, 1-0 HC) had its best chance early in the 28th minute when TAYLOR SETTECERRI broke through the Patriot defense and sent a shot on net. Dallas Baptist goalkeeper Kerry Edwards was there for the save and Settecerri's follow-up was blocked by a Patriot defender.

In the 29th minute, the Hilltoppers were whistled for a foul. Patriot defender Jake Cox sent a shot from 30 yards out towards Licarione. The junior keeper misjudged the shot and it went through her hands and into the net for a 1-0 Patriot lead.

That goal might have put most teams on its heels, but it fired up the Hilltoppers. St. Edward's came right back down to the other side of the field and LAUREN HELLER drew a foul inside the Patriot box for a penalty kick. Heller took the penalty and had Edwards guessing the wrong way. The tally was her fourth of the season.

Not more than two minutes later, junior RACHEL MURRAY got loose on a breakaway from midfield and beat Edwards one-on-one to give St. Edward's a 2-1 lead. JESSICA TRAVES was credited with the assist.

That is the way the half would end with the Hilltoppers nursing a 2-1 lead. Both teams would register seven shots in the first frame.

In the second half, it was St. Edward's who was the aggressor again. In the 53rd minute, the Hilltoppers gained a cornerkick. The ball was sent towards the box and sophomore ALLY LINDQUIST was there for the one-timer and a 3-1 Hilltopper lead.

Four minutes later, MEGAN ANDERSON put St. Edward's ahead, 4-1. She received a pass from Murray at the penalty spot on a counter attack. The midfielder sent a shot towards the left post and past Edwards for her second goal of the season.

The Hilltoppers would cap off the scoring in the 69th minute when they received a free kick right near the corner flag. TAYLOR WISEMAN took the free kick and went far post where Murray was there to head it back across the goal in which RIANA SOOBADOO one-timed it into the back of the net.

St. Edward's barely outshot Dallas Baptist, 14-13, but the shots were on the mark as they tallied seven of them on goal compared to just three for the Patriots.

“We have the potential of being a really good team and today was a good victory over a really good team,” head coach Nick Cowell said. “Lots of teams would have folded after the first goal, but I was proud that we fought back and momentum took over after that.”

Dallas Baptist was second in the region, while St. Edward's was one spot back at third.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Thursday as they continue their five-match homestand. They will welcome UT-Permian Basin to Lewis-Chen Family Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the Hilltopper Athletic Website will have live stats and video for the match.
