Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – On Thursday afternoon, the St. Edward's men's soccer team lost a tough 2-1 decision to UT-Permian Basin. The Hilltoppers now sit at 1-3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Heartland Conference.
St. Edward's didn't take long to score the game's first goal. In the fourth minute,
DANIEL RILEY beat the keeper one-on-one off an assist from
JAMES MARTIN.This was Riley's second goal of the season.
UT-Permian Basin would begin to test the St. Edward's defense. In the 19
th minute of action, the Falcons took two shots on goal. First, an attempt from Falcon Rafael Borges was blocked by the Hilltopper defense. Next, an attempt by Falcon Jose Anchondo was saved by St. Edward's goalkeeper John Kaschak. In the 42
nd minute, Kascak would make another save, this time on an attempt by Falcon Logan Sharp.
The Falcons would not be denied for long, however. In the 44
th minute, Falcon midfielder Matt Rodgers tapped in a goal off an assist by Ciarin Connery. Conner's assist came off a cornerkick. St. Edward's last attempt of the half came on a shot by Colton Stymeist which was blocked the Falcons defense.
The St. Edward's defense would be tested often in the second half. Kaschak would make saves in the 54
th and 56
th minutes, both on attempts by Falcon Tyler Gibson. Kaschak would make his sixth and final save of the match in the 58
th minute on an attempt by Falcon Andrew Enriquez.
The St. Edward's offense would take six shots in the second half, including three on goal. A missed opportunity came in the 78
th minute when
KARL DEZOETEN had his attempt saved by Falcon goalkeeper Chris Branum.
In the 80
th minute, the Falcons would strike again when Gary Willis sent a header to the far post. Willis was assisted by Anchondo off a cornerkick. Ironically, Willis had been given a yellow card just moments prior to his goal. The Hilltoppers would get one last chance for a goal in the 87
th minute. The header attempt by
GAVIN BRUCE was saved by the goalkeeper Branum.
St. Edward's will be back in action on Saturday when they host McMurry. Action will begin at 2:30 at the Lewis-Chen Family Field.
