Hilltoppers bounce back with 2-0 win over McMurry

Daniel Riley
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The Hilltoppers responded to Thursday's tough loss with a 2-0-shutout win over McMurry on a sunny Saturday afternoon. St. Edward's improved to 2-3-1 overall.

DANIEL RILEY helped the Hilltoppers take an early 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the match. He used his speed and athleticism to pass up the Warhawk defenders and fire a shot from the left side of the box, that found the back of the net.  It was Riley's third goal of the season. St. Edward's continued its offensive attack as it took six shots following Riley's goal.

Riley found the back of the net for the second time in the first half. He connected on a header off of a corner kick by teammate KARL DEZOETEN. The goal was scored in the 27th minute of the match.

The Hilltoppers controlled the match offensively during the first half of play. They recorded a total of 15 shots and three corner kicks. St. Edward's also dictated the defensive play by not allowing any shots during the period.

The second half of play was much like the first. The Hilltoppers dominated the offensive and defensive sides of play. St. Edward's finished with 23 total shots, while the Hilltopper defense only allowed three shots, which not were on goal. Hilltopper goalkeeper JOHN KASCHAK recorded his third shutout of the season.

Head Coach Brian Young was proud of his team's effort; he commented after the game, “Putting teams under pressure is what we want from all our players. In our last game we didn't do that, but against McMurry we defended very well. It was also unfortunate we didn't finish the chances we had today.”

St. Edward's will take the road as they face Heartland Conference opponent Newman on Thursday September 27th in Wichita, Kan. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Live stats will be available through the Jets website.
