St. Edward’s beats Newman 1-0; gets another shutout

WICHITA, Kansas – The St. Edward's men's soccer team beat Newman, 1-0 on Thursday night. The Hilltoppers improved to 3-3-1 on the season and 2-1 in the Heartland Conference. 
 
In a defensive struggle that featured a total of thirteen shots, St. Edward's came away with the win and their fourth shutout in the last five games. The Hilltoppers would take just one shot during the first half of play. JAMES MARTIN had attempt in the 10th minute of action was saved by Newman goalkeeper Robin Allard.
 
Newman's first shot came in the 22nd minute of action when Matt McConnell's attempt sailed high. Newman would take three more shots in the first half, but none of them threatened the goal. 
 
The second half began with a flurry of fouls. St. Edward's was whistled for four fouls in the first 10 minutes of the half. In the 59th minute of action, a foul called on Newman led to a free kick for St. Edward's. ANDREW FOX would take the kick and find KYLE PUJATS in the box who sent the ball into the net off his right foot.  
 
Both teams would take four shots in the second half. Newman's only shot on goal came in the 71st minute of action. St. Edward's goalkeeper JOHN KASCHAK made the save on attempt by Brandon Carlos. St. Edward's had a chance to add to the lead in the 85th minute, but DANIEL RILEY had a shot that was saved by Allard. 
 
Coach Young had this to say after the game, “The team competed well tonight in a tough away venue and again got another shutout. I was proud of the team effort.”
 
St. Edward's will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Oklahoma City to take on Oklahoma Christian. Action will begin at 2:30.
 
As a member of NCAA Division II and the Heartland Conference, St. Edward's University, has captured 46 conference titles, advanced to the NCAA tournament 58 times and has produced 38 All-Americans and 36 Academic All-Americans since 1999.
