CLAREMORE, Okla. – DANIEL RILEY scored two early goals to help the Hilltoppers capture their seventh straight victory with a 3-1 win over Rogers State. St. Edward's improves to 7-1-1 and 3-0 in conference play.
Riley scored the first goal of the game just 13 minutes into the match. ANDERSON MCDANIEL provided the assist as Riley knocked in the goal from about six yards out. This was Riley's team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Riley was back at it again just nine minutes later scoring his ninth goal of the season and second for the game. KARL DEZOETEN took the cornerkick that was awarded to the Hilltoppers and Riley was in position to head it into the back of the net for the score. St. Edward's now led 2-0.
Rogers State responded with a goal during the 36th minute of action. Mitchell Sowerby scored his first goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. Kaspars Kokis and Necas Collins had a pair of one-touch passes that eventually found Sowerby for the goal.
JASON AIKEN countered with a goal of his own just 28 seconds after Rogers State got on the board. Aiken scored his second goal of the season off a HAIDEN STILES cross that was headed into the net by Aiken. The Hilltoppers led 3-1 going into halftime.
St. Edward's had several chances to increase its lead during the second period, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Hilltoppers outshot the Hillcats, 8-3 in the second period and 20-5 for the match.
Head coach Brian Young commented after the game, "Games are always tough on the road and the players were ready to play from the whistle. Our play was excellent in the first half and Danny Riley led us. He had another great match. "
"We could've finished the game better but I was happy with the result against a good team. We have another game on Monday in a very tough place to play at Newman," concluded coach Young.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Monday, as they travel to take on Heartland Conference opponent Newman in Wichita, Kan. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. at Wilkins Field on the campus of Newman. Live stats will be available through the Jet Athletic website.
