Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. – The St. Edward's women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Rogers State on Saturday night. The Hilltoppers outshot the Hillcats 29-2 for the match but could not register a goal until
MIKAYLA ENGEL scored on a header in the 80
th minute of action. St. Edward's improves to 8-0-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Heartland Conference.
The Hilltopper offense had scoring opportunities early in the match, but the Hillcats defense, led by goalkeeper Jordan Harris, held St. Edward's without a goal in the first half. Harris made five saves in the opening period with the first on
MEGAN ANDERSON's attempt in the 9
th minute.
St. Edward's had three shots on goal in the 22
nd minute. First,
RACHEL MURRAY's attempt was deflected away by Harris. Murray followed up the deflection and this time hit the post. With the ball still alive, Engel fired a shot that was saved by Hillcat defender Melissa Subu. The Hilltoppers went into halftime tied 0-0 despite outshooting Rogers State 11-2.
In the second half, St. Edward's would outshoot the Hillcats 18-0, but would continue to have trouble getting the ball past Harris and the Hillcat defense. Harris made a total of 11 saves with 6 coming the second period.
Murray had several shots saved by Harris in the second half with the first coming in the 48
th minute. To Murray's credit, she led the Hilltoppers with seven shot attempts including five shots on goal.
St. Edward's would find the back of the net in the 80
th minute of action.
RIANA SOOBADOO passed to Anderson who sent a cross in the direction of Engel. Engel headed the ball to the back post for the lone goal of the match.
St. Edward's has now won six straight matches and has shutout their opponent in each of the wins.
