Hilltoppers fall to TAMU-Kingsville in four sets

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – ANNA AYCOCK led the way with 13 kills for St. Edward's as they fell in four sets to the Javelinas of Texas A&M – Kingsville on Saturday afternoon at the Steinke Center on the TAMU-Kingsville Campus. The Lady Javelinas topped St. Edward's 13-25, 25-18, 25-21, and 25–19.
 
St. Edward's jumped out to an early 13-2 lead during the first set. The Hilltoppers took advantage of attacking errors and kills by AMY JONES, MARY KOEHLER, and HANNAH RAUCH. The Javelinas sprinkled in a few points, but St. Edward's ran away with the first set, 25–13.
 
The second set was competitive at the start. The teams were knotted at five early on in the set before the TAMU-Kingsville saw their lead grow 13-9. St. Edward's stayed within striking distance throughout the duration of the second set. The Hilltoppers were down 21-16 and scored two consecutive points to cut the lead to three but that would be the closest St. Edward's would come falling to TAMU-Kingsville 25-18 in the second set.  
 
The Hilltoppers took an early 6-3 lead at the beginning of the third set. The Javelinas responded and tied the set at nine apiece. After exchanging points, the third set was tied at 20. The Javelinas took the 23-20 advantage, until HANNAH RAUCH stopped the run with a kill and cut the lead to two, 23-21. The Hilltoppers wouldn't get any closer and lost the third set, 25-21.
 
St. Edward's started the fourth set similar to the first, taking an early 10-3 lead. MARY KOEHLER added one of her 10 kills to increase the lead to 15-11 in favor of St. Edward's. Rauch posted another kill to give the Hilltoppers an 18-15 lead. Unfortunately, St. Edward's would score only one more point the set, dropping the fourth set 25-19.
 
Aycock, MARY KOEHLER, and HANNAH RAUCH combined for 33 kills in the contest. KELLY JIMENEZ and Koehler each had 17 digs.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Oct. 22 when they return home for a non-conference matchup against Tarleton State. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center (RCC) on the St. Edward's campus. Live video and stats will be available through the Hilltopper athletic website.
