Hilltoppers can’t find net in 0-0 tie against West Texas A&M

Box Score PORTALES, N.M. – The St. Edward's women's soccer team couldn't find the net in a 0-0 tie against West Texas A&M Friday afternoon. The Hilltoppers outshot the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M, 15-9 for the game. St. Edward's is now 2-0-2 on the season after two straight ties.
 
The match was physically contested throughout with a total of 28 fouls called. There were 12 fouls called in the first half with eight going against St. Edward's.
 
In the first half, goalkeeper DANIELLE LICARIONE was kept busy as seven of the nine Lady Buffs' shot attempts came in the opening period. Licarione made her first save in the 13th minute on an attempt by Lady Buff Kaitlin Steele. Her next save came in the 36th minute on an attempt by Lady Buff Jasmine Shultz.
 
The Hilltoppers took five shots in the first half with the first attempt coming in the 15th minute when JESSICA TRAVES' shot sailed high. RACHEL MURRAY's shot in in the 26th minute went wide.
 
In the second half, both teams combined took just six shot attempts. St. Edward's took four shots in the half with the first coming in the 58th minute when KATIE DONAHUE's header shot went wide. Less than two minutes later, MEGAN ANDERSON's shot went high. The Hilltoppers had two more opportunities in the closing minutes. In the 87th minute, Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week VALENCIA MOBLEY's shot was blocked. In the 89th minute, Murray's shot was saved Lady Buff goalkeeper Yvette Bedoy.
 
In the first overtime period, St. Edward's best chance for a goal came in the 93rd minute when ALLY LINDQUIST had her shot saved by the keeper. In the second overtime period, the Hilltoppers got off four shots in the 10-minute period. In the 108th minute, Murray had a shot go wide. The Hilltoppers' last chance for a goal came in the 109th minute when LAUREN HELLER's shot was saved by the keeper.
 
"I was proud of the way our team fought to the end and matched the opponent's physicality," said head coach Nick Cowell. "We kept our unbeaten record and achieved another shutout." 
 
The Hilltoppers will resume action this Sunday against Eastern New Mexico. Kick-off from Portales, N.M. is set for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through the Eastern New Mexico Athletic website.
