DALLAS, Texas – The St. Edward's women's soccer team defeated Dallas Baptist, 2-0, in a weather-shortened match on Saturday afternoon. LAUREN HELLER scored the both goals of the match. With the win, the Hilltoppers are now 4-0-2 on the season. Even though the Patriots are in the Heartland Conference, this was a non-conference match.
In the first half, Dallas Baptist (3-3-1) outshot the Hilltoppers 6-1. St. Edward's goalkeeper DANIELLE LICARIONE made three saves in the half with the first occurring in the fourth minute of action on an attempt by Dixie Kurrus. Licarione's other save was on an attempt by Annie Wells in the 34th minute.
KELLY DAVIS took St. Edward's only shot of the half in the 43rd minute of action. Dallas Baptist goalkeeper Kerry Edwards made the save on Davis' attempt.
Most of the second half was played in steady rain. The Hilltoppers outshot Dallas Baptist in the half, 8-2. RACHEL MURRAY took three shot attempts in a four-minute span, but she couldn't come up with that elusive first goal of the season. Murray had a shot blocked in the 49th minute and a follow-up shot by KATE ORKILD was also blocked.
LAUREN HELLER found the net in the 75th minute off an assist from VALENCIA MOBLEY. Play was delayed after lightning was spotted in the area just after Heller's goal.
When play resumed, Heller struck again in the 82nd minute to give St. Edward's a 2-0 advantage. Heller received a cornerkick from Murray and beat the keeper for the goal. Heller is now second on the team with three goals on the year.
The game was called after lightning was spotted again the 84th minute. Results of the match will count as it went the NCAA-required 70 minutes.
The Hilltoppers resume action on Monday at home against Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's. The "Battle of the Saints" will kick off at 2:30 p.m. at the Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live stats and video will be available through the Hilltopper Athletic website.
