AUSTIN, Texas – In the "Battle of the Saints," the St. Edward's women's soccer team beat St. Mary's 5-0 Monday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Five separate players scored a goal for the Hilltoppers. St. Edward's controlled the match throughout, outshooting the Rattlers of St. Mary's 18-0.
In the first half, St. Edward's (5-0-2) took eight shots and scored three goals. KATIE DONAHUE put the Hilltoppers up 1-0 in the 13th minute of action when she beat the keeper on a free kick from 25 yards out. This was Donahue's first goal of the season.
ALLY LINDQUIST had her shot blocked by the Rattler defense in the 15th minute. In the 19th minute, LAUREN HELLER received a cross from Lindquist and headed the ball into the net to give the Hilltoppers a 2-0 lead. Heller's four goals on the season tie her with CAILYN TRAPANI for most on the team.
St. Edward's used some great teamwork to score the third goal. JESSICA TRAVES received a cornerkick from RACHEL MURRAY and sent a cross to Heller. Heller headed the ball in the direction of Lindquist who tapped the ball past the keeper. The goal gave the Hilltoppers a 3-0 lead entering halftime.
In the second half, St. Edward's kept the pressure on with 10 more shot attempts. Less than five minutes into the half, MIKAYLA ENGEL headed in a goal off an assist by Donahue to push the lead to 4-0. This was Engel's second goal of the season.
In the 60th minute, the Hilltoppers added another goal off a cornerkick by Murray. TAYLOR SETTECERRI received the kick and sent a cross to Donahue. Donahue sent the ball to MEGAN ANDERSON who headed the ball into the net to give St. Edward's a 5-0 advantage. In addition the first goal of the match, Donahue recorded two assists.
The St. Edward's defense kept the ball away from goalkeepers DANIELLE LICARIONE and LORRIE SANTOY. The Hilltoppers did not allow a single shot by the Rattlers, earning their fifth shutout of the season.
Today's team effort saw all 24 Hilltoppers dressed receive playing time. Reserves KELLY DAVIS and JESSICA WILLIAMSON each had a chance to add a goal in the 75th minute. Davis' shot was saved by the keeper and Williamson's follow-up went wide left.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Saturday at home against Oklahoma Christian. Kick off is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live stats and video will be available through the Hilltopper Athletic website.
