Hilltoppers end opening weekend of action in a 3-3 tie against Fort Lewis

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Hilltoppers saw their second game of the 2013 season end in a 3-3 tie against Fort Lewis on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Chen Family Field.
 
The game started off physical with both teams receiving a yellow card in the opening 13 minutes of play. Fort Lewis's Alberto Capdepon and St. Edward's MATT MCLAUGHLIN were the players receiving the cards.
 
Just seconds after McLaughlin earned the yellow card; Fort Lewis scored the first goal of the contest. Yannis Becker scored his first goal of the season from a shot about 25 yards out that went through JOHN KASCHAK's hands.
 
The Hilltoppers would draw even with the Skyhawks near the conclusion of the first period. Freshman forward JASON AIKEN knocked in a header for his first collegiate goal, but more importantly help St. Edward's go into the break tied with Fort Lewis at one a piece. KYLE PUJATS and HAIDEN STILES assisted on the goal.
 
Becker scored his second goal of the season during the 63rd minute of action to help Fort Lewis regain the lead, 2-1. He knocked in a header from six yards out. Teammate Jordan Alexander assisted on the play.
 
ANDREW FOX scored for St. Edward's in the 77th minute of action for the games second tie, 2-2. Fox scored on a penalty kick that was set up by a foul via Maik Brandt of the Skyhawks.
 
DANIEL RILEY, the 2012 leading goal scorer for the Hilltoppers scored his first goal of the 2013 campaign in the 80th minute of play. Riley took a cross from teammate ANDREW FOX and tapped in the goal for the 3-2 St. Edward's lead.
 
Becker recorded the hat trick for Fort Lewis and tied the game at three a piece with just over a minute remaining in the contest. Riley attempted to win the game with just seven seconds remaining, but Ryan Schaul made the save on the shot.
 
The first 10-minute overtime period only saw one shot by Fort Lewis and it was by Becker. His shot sailed wide right. St. Edward's only scoring chance in the period came on a corner kick by ANDERSON MCDANIEL, but the Hilltoppers couldn't capitalize.
 
The final 10-minute period came with chances from both squads to get the game winner, as well as the defensive urgency to not allow the eventual game winner. There were a total of seven shots, four fouls, and a yellow card between the squads in the final frame. Pujats connected on header off an Fox corner kick, but the shot went wide left. Riley also had a header for a chance to take the lead, but the Skyhawk goalkeeper made the save. JOSH TAYLOR had the final chance for St. Edward's, but Fort Lewis defenders blocked his shot with just over 30 seconds remaining in the game.
 
St. Edward's outshot Fort Lewis 25-14, and had a 10-8 shots on goal advantage over the Skyhawks during the 110-minute match. The Hilltoppers also got the better of Fort Lewis on corner kicks with a 13-1 advantage.
 
Head Coach Brian Young commented after the game, "I was happy with the type of soccer we played today against a very good side. I thought from the start of the second half on, we were the better team and I was disappointed we didn't finish off the game properly. We will take the lessons learned from the opening weekend and prepare for two good opponents in Metro State and Regis this upcoming weekend in Denver."
 
The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Denver, Colo. to take on their third consecutive Colorado opponent, Metro State. Kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m. Live stats will be available through the Roadrunner Athletic website.
