Box Score DALLAS, Texas – After dropping the first two sets, St. Edward's came roaring back to defeat Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist, 3-2, Thursday evening at the Burg Center.
The Patriots made it known that they were ready to play as they took a quick two set lead. The Hilltoppers battled throughout the first half of the opening set, but Dallas Baptist was able to run away with the win, 25-22.
Although St. Edward's had a 12-8 advantage over the home team, it was not able to hold on. The Patriots rallied back and deadlocked the set at 13-13. From that point, the home team would not look back. Dallas Baptist repeated, winning 25-22 again.
The Hilltoppers would not go quietly, aiming to better their record and defeat the Patriots for a second time this season. The visitors did not give up the lead once in the third set. St. Edward's, ahead 20-15, hung on with
ELISSA STANTON delivering the set-winning kill.
In the fourth set, the two teams went point-for-point. Even at 6-6, the Hilltoppers made a move. They found themselves with a 20-15 lead once again. St. Edward's managed to force a fifth set, winning the fourth, 25-21.
In the final, decisive set the visiting team topped Dallas Baptist 15-10. Using momentum from the prior two sets, St. Edward's held the Patriots to a .061 hitting percentage while it managed a .296 hitting percentage.
MARY KOEHLER and
KATIE MARTIN contributed offensively with both tallying 16 kills. Koehler registered another double-double on the season with her 16 kills and 18 digs.
JESSICA MORALES added 20 digs and
LOREN KELLY recorded 34 assists.
St. Edward's takes on Arkansas-Fort Smith next on Saturday at 1 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on the Lion Athletic Website.
