FORT SMITH, Ark. —The St. Edward's Volleyball team was defeated, 3-2, by UA Fort Smith Saturday afternoon in the Heartland Conference Championship at the Stubblefield Center.
UA Fort Smith (25-4) captured the lead early in the first set, 8-5. St. Edward's (19-8) rallied back with an 8-0 run, stunning UA Fort Smith and gaining a 20-15 edge. The Hilltoppers would hang on to claim set one, 25-20. They registered a .390 hitting percentage and tallied 18 kills.
Just as in the first set, UA Fort Smith jumped out to take a 10-6 advantage over the visiting team. Two attack errors by the Lions and three-consecutive kills by Hilltopper
HANNAH RAUCH evened the score, 18-18. St. Edward's scored six-unanswered points to take the set, 25-20. The home team was held to a .049 hitting percentage by the visitors.
Set three went down to the wire, as the Lions fought to avoid a three-set sweep. The two teams traded the lead until UA Fort Smith was able to create space and took a 16-11 lead. The Hilltoppers then outscored the Lions 8-3, bringing the score to 19-19. Although St. Edward's stole the lead at 21-20, three kills by UA-Fort Smith down the stretch would give the home team a 25-23 set three win.
The Lions quieted the Hilltoppers offense as they opened the fourth set on a 6-0 run. They registered a .233 hitting percentage and dominated St. Edward's, 25-15, to force a fifth set.
Although St. Edward's was tied with the Lions at 13-13 in set five, it could not overcome UA-Fort Smith's .301 hitting percentage and 13 kills, losing 15-13.
HANNAH RAUCH recorded 16 kills.
MARY KOEHLER earned a double-double with 15 kills and 21 digs.
LOREN KELLY led the Hilltoppers in assists with 26 while
KELLY JIMENEZ saw a match-high 35 digs.
