Hilltopper comeback attempt comes up short versus McMurry

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's men's basketball fought back from a double-digit deficit to pull within one during the last minute, but ended up falling to McMurry, 68-65, Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
 
McMurry (11-12, 6-8 HC) led by 14 points at the break and by as many as 17 points with 17 minutes left in the second half.
 
A jumper by Alfred Perez gave the War Hawks an 11-point advantage with 9:48 remaining. That is when St. Edward's (10-12, 6-8 HC) started to heat up from outside. The Hilltoppers would can four shots from downtown to knot the score, 57-57, with 5:38 remaining in the contest.
 
After two made free throws by Connor Robinson gave McMurry a five-point lead with 1:21 left, RAMIR BURTON made a runner to cut the lead to three with 1:07 remaining. The Hilltoppers got a stop on the defensive end and JAMES STUKES' chance for a three-point play was barely off of the mark. He made two free throws to reduce the lead to one point with 12 seconds left. After the War Hawks made two free throws to push the lead back to three points, Burton's three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out.
 
Stukes led the Hilltoppers with 18 points to go along with his seven rebounds. Burton added 14 points and four assists while JOHN RUTHERFORD canned four shot from downtown for 12 points.
 
St. Edward's will be back in action Thursday when they host Heartland Conference co-leader Texas A&M-International. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
