St. Edward’s sweeps Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team swept Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. The Hilltoppers won the first game 4-2 behind home runs by CYDNEY ERVIN and LAUREN BRODE. St. Edward's scored all five of its runs in the third inning to win the second game, 5-0. The Hilltoppers improve to 11-6 on the year and have now won seven of its past nine games.
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville (5-11) got off to a hot start in game one by scoring two runs in the first inning. Bailey Offill reached on a fielding error by Brode. Off a sacrifice bunt by Erica Graham, Offill advanced to third and would score off a throwing error by right fielder MARISA BOGART. Next, Carynn Gonzalez doubled to right center to score Graham. These were the only two runs that the Javelinas would score on the day.
 
St. Edward's matched the Javelinas with two first inning runs. Ervin started the bottom of the first with a homer to left center. The Javelinas' left fielder, Jaeleen Castro, crashed into the outfield fence while attempting to catch the ball, and the ball fell over the fence. KACI OLSON followed with a singled to left field. Olson would advance to second off a sacrifice bunt by KENDALL LUCAS and advance to third off a single to left field by CAITIE CARNEY. Olson scored on a wild pitch to knot the score.
 
The Hilltoppers added two more runs in the sixth inning to gain a 4-2 lead. E. Mayfield singled up the middle and proceeded to steal second base. Brode who had only one RBI in her early season struggles, tripled her run production with a two-run homer to left field.
 
KATELYN KLUG ended any hopes of a comeback by getting all three Javelinas batters to ground out in the seventh. Klug allowed just three hits and improves to 5-2.
 
In game two, the Hilltoppers scored all five of their runs in the third inning. First, KP PERCH reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Perch would advance to second off a single down the left field line by SAMANTHA GILMORE. Bogart followed with a single to left center and would advance to second a fielding error by the center fielder. Gilmore advanced to third while Perch scored on the play to give the Hilltopers a 1-0 lead. Ervin would make it 2-0 with a single to right field that scored Gilmore.
 
Still in the third inning, Bogart and Ervin would score when the shortstop made a throwing error off a hit by Lucas. With the score now 4-0, FAITH ROBERTS singled down the left field line to advance Lucas to second. Brode doubled to right center to score Lucas and make it 5-0.
SARAH DEBROW allowed just three hits on the day as she improved to 6-4. Debrow struck out five batters and to give her 61 strikeouts on the year. Offensively, Brode had three RBI on the day, while Ervin had two RBI to give her six on the year. 
 
St. Edward's returns to action on Saturday for a road doubleheader against #6 Texas Woman's. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. in Denton, Texas.
