Hilltoppers split doubleheader against Incarnate Word

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team split its doubleheader matchup against Incarnate Word on Wednesday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. The Hilltoppers won the first game 8-1 behind 11 hits. MARISA BOGART, CAITIE CARNEY, and KENDALL LUCAS each had two hits in the contest. St. Edward's (19-11) lost game two, 4-3.
 
In game one, the Hilltoppers put two runs on the board in the third inning. BREAH WHITTEN singled to the catcher. CYDNEY ERVIN bunted to the catcher for a single that advanced Whitten to second. A sacrifice bunt by Lucas advanced the two runners. Next, FAITH ROBERTS singled to center field to score Whitten and Ervin.
 
Incarnate Word scored one run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Taylor Johnson reached on a fielding error by Lucas at shortstop and proceeded to steal second. A single through the left side by Shelby Waltrip scored Johnson.
 
St. Edward's scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 6-1. Ervin was hit by a pitch and preceded to steal second. A single through the right side by Lucas advanced Ervin to third. Ervin would make it 3-1 when she stole home. Next, Carney bunted to the catcher for a single that advanced Roberts and Lucas. Then, Bogart singled to left center to score Roberts and Lucas.
 
Still in the fifth inning, SAMANTHA GILMORE pinch ran for Carney. KACI OLSON singled to third base to advance Bogart to second, while Gilmore stayed at third. A wild pitch allowed Gilmore to score.
 
The Hilltoppers made it 8-1 with two more runs in the sixth inning. Lucas singled to centerfield and proceeded to steal second. A single to right field by LAUREN BRODE scored Lucas. Bogart singled through the left side to advance Brode to second. Next, a fielding error by the Incarnate Word shortstop allowed Brode to score.
 
KATELYN KLUG struck out five batters to improve to 9-4.
 
In game two, Incarnate Word took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Kristin Herbert homered to left center to score Alex Zepeda.
 
Carney homered to center field in the second inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Carney's four home runs on the year tie her with Roberts for the team lead.
 
Incarnate Word scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Herbert doubled to right center to score Zepeda and Robles.
 
St. Edward's cut the lead to 4-3 lead in the fifth inning. Ervin homered to left field to score Whitten. This was Ervin's second home run of the year.
 
The Hilltoppers were unable to score in the sixth or seventh inning. SARAH DEBROW struck out 12 batters in a losing effort and drops to 10-7 on the year.
 
St. Edward's will return to action on Friday for a doubleheader against Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla. Games will be played at 1:00 and 3:00. Check for results on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
