Hilltoppers drop tough decision to Rogers State in final game of series, 4-2

Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. – KENDALL LUCAS provided two hits and two RBI on Saturday afternoon but that was not enough as St. Edward's fell to Rogers State, 4-2 in the final game of the three game series. The Hilltoppers fall to 22-14 this season with a 7-5 record in Heartland Conference action.
 
St. Edward's came out firing and took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. BREAH WHITTEN continued her hot streak from a day ago and got on base with a single. After Whitten made her way into scoring position, FAITH ROBERTS provided the SAC fly for the game's first run.
 
Rogers State doubled up on the Hilltoppers, taking the 2-1 lead after the first inning. St. Edward's tied the game in the third inning, 2-2. This time it was CYDNEY ERVIN that had a leadoff single. Ervin advanced into scoring position and was driven home by a KENDALL LUCAS single.
 
St. Edward's had two chances to regain the lead, but left two runners on base in the process. In the fifth inning, Whitten recorded her second hit with a single up the middle. KACI OLSON grounded out, but allowed Whitten to move to scoring position. Lucas grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.
 
In the sixth inning, Roberts led things off with a single up the middle. GABRIELA MACIAS took over as a pinch runner for Roberts and advanced to second when CAITIE CARNEY came up to bat. Two outs quickly followed and Macias was left on second.
 
Rogers State took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs on three hits. One of the Hillcat runs came on a Hilltopper error. Rogers State led 4-2 going into the final inning of play.
 
The seventh inning was quick, as St. Edward's couldn't mount any threat to extend the game. One popup and two groundouts ended the game and the Hilltoppers suffered a close 4-2 loss.
 
Whitten and Lucas accounted for four of the six hits for St. Edward's. KATELYN KLUG had another solid day on the mound with four strikeouts in six innings of work.
 
St. Edward's will be back in action on Friday for the first game of a three game series against Lubbock Christian. Games time is set for 3:30 pm. at Diane Daniels Field on the St. Edward's campus. Live stats and video will be available through the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
