Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team lost both games in its doubleheader matchup against Lubbock Christian on Saturday afternoon. The Hilltoppers left seven runners on base in game one as they lost by a score of 5-1. The Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian tallied 16 hits in game two as they won 8-3. St. Edward's is now 23-16 overall and 8-6 in the Heartland Conference.
In game one, St. Edward's put two runners on base in the first inning. However,
KACI OLSON and
KENDALL LUCAS would be left on base.
Lubbock Christian made it 1-0 in the second inning when Morgan Colburn hit a solo home run. The Hilltopper defense was able to prevent any more runs that inning. In the third inning, Ashton Bell homered to right center to give Lubbock Christian a 2-0 lead.
The fourth inning saw Lubbock Christian build a 5-0 lead. A double to left field by Bell scored Kirstie Cochran and Diana De La Paz. Then, Kaitlin Reed scored on a sacrifice fly by Sullivan.
St. Edward's scored a run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-1.
BREAH WHITTEN reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second by Olson's single up the middle. Olson and Whitten each advanced off a sacrifice bunt by Lucas. Whitten scored off a double to left field by
FAITH ROBERTS.
KATELYN KLUG drops to 12-7 on the year. Klug struck out three batters.
In game two, Lubbock Christian took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Mallory Koschany scored off a single to right center by Megan Sullivan.
The Hilltoppers took a 3-1 lead in the second inning.
LAUREN BRODE started things off with a single to shortstop. Brode advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher.
CAITIE CARNEY and
CYDNEY ERVIN each walked to load the bases for St. Edward's. Next, Whitten sent a single to right field that was mishandled by the right fielder. Brode, Carney, and Ervin all scored on the play.
Lubbock Christian responded with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Shlay Denison reached on an error by the shortstop. A single up the middle by Bell scored Denison. Cochran was brought home by Jessica Loiacano's single up the middle. Bell scored off a single by Colburn. Sullivan made it 5-3 when she scored off single by Katera Eltsosie.
The Lady Chaps added three more runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-3 lead. Cochran hit a single to centerfield that was mishandled by Ervin. Billings, De La Paz, and Cochran all scored on the play.
CAITIE CARNEY struck out two batters in a losing effort. Whitten had three hits and two RBI in the contest.
St. Edward's will return to action on Friday for a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City, Okla. Games will be played at 5:00 and 7:00.
