Hilltoppers jump into second place with 2-1 victory over TAMU-International in extra innings

Box Score LAREDO, Texas – SARAH DEBROW pitched her second consecutive game on Saturday afternoon in the rubber match against the Dustdevils. She struck out 10 batters in route to her 14th victory on the season. The Hilltoppers improve to 27-20 overall and 11-10 in Heartland Conference play. The victory gives the Hilltoppers sole possession of second place with only one conference series remaining.
 
St. Edward's mounted a threat in the first inning with two hits. BREAH WHITTEN singled to shortstop and ALEX MAYFIELD singled to right center. They were in scoring position, but KENDALL LUCAS flied into a double play and the inning was over.
 
The Hilltoppers kept the Dustdevils at bay for the first two innings only allowing one hit. SARAH DEBROW struck out three batters in that span. TAMU-International posted a threat in third inning with two hits, but no runners crossed the plate and the score remained 0-0.
 
The pitching dual continued through the contest with neither pitcher giving up a hit until the top of the sixth inning. That's when St. Edward's took advantage of their two hits and had a runner cross home for the games first run. CYDNEY ERVIN got on a base with a single to the shortstop. Ervin advanced to second on a sacrifice play by Whitten and crossed home when ALEX MAYFIELD doubled to right center.
 
The Dustdevils evened the game at one a piece during the bottom of the seventh inning. St. Edward's committed an error in the inning, forcing the run to be unearned. Debrow got the final two outs and the game was headed to extra innings.
 
The Hilltoppers earned the go ahead run in the eighth inning. Whitten singled to left field and advanced to second. ALEX MAYFIELD singled to third base advancing Whitten to third. Mayfield stole second and an error committed by the third baseman allowed Whitten to score.
 
Debrow took care of the Dustdevils in order as it was three-up, three-down for TAMU-International in the bottom of the eighth inning. St. Edward's won game three of the series and are now in sole position of second place in the Heartland Conference.
 
St. Edward's will be back in action on April 17th as they return home for a non-conference matchup against Angelo State. Game time is set for 3:00 pm at Diane Daniels Field on the campus of St. Edward's. Live stats and video will be available through the Hilltopper athletic website.
