WICHITA, Kan. – The St. Edward's Women's Soccer team stayed undefeated in Heartland Conference play with a 3-0 win over Newman Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
Both teams traded shots in the early going, but in the eighth minute, a St. Edward's player was taken down in the box to earn the Hilltoppers a penalty kick. Senior
KATIE DONAHUE calmly stepped up and drilled her third goal of the season.
In a fairly even first half shots-wise, it was St. Edward's (8-2, 3-0 HC) that finished its chances. In the 34
th minute, a St. Edward's cornerkick found the head of freshman
SABRINA CONE. Her header found
JENNIFER BOUDREAU right in front of the goal for a point-blank shot. It was her third goal of the season as well.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers dominated as they outshot the Jets, 14-0.
St. Edward's tallied its final goal of the match in the 78
th minute when another Hilltopper cornerkick from
VALENCIA MOBLEY found the head of senior
TAYLOR SETTECERRI. Her header goal was her first of the season.
St. Edward's outshot Newman, 19-4, and had seven cornerkicks compared to zero for the Jets.
"Newman is a much improved team and we had difficulty breaking them down in the first half, despite our 2-0 lead," St. Edward's Head Coach Nick Cowell said. "In the second half we dominated possession, and with a bit more luck we could have scored a few more goals."
St. Edward's will return home to host Dallas Baptist on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
