LAS VEGAS, Nev.- The St. Edward's Softball team won its final game in the Desert Stinger Classic, defeating UC-Colorado Springs, 8-0 in Majestic Park. The win gave the Hilltoppers a perfect 5-0 record tying with three other teams for the top spot in the tournament. After tiebreakers were sorted out, the Hilltoppers took home third place honors with 33 points. CSU-San Marcos (36) and CSU-Monterey Bay (34) finished in first and second place, respectively.
St. Edward's (8-5) entered into the match against UC-Colorado Springs (2-3) with a goal to keep a perfect record in the tournament. The Hilltoppers ended up capping off the weekend with a great offensive and defensive performance.
The runs began in the bottom of the first inning as
ALEX MAYFIELD registered an unearned run. Two innings later, the Hilltoppers widened the gap with runs by
FAITH ROBERTS and
AUBREY RUIZ. Entering the bottom of the fourth, St. Edward's had a 3-0 lead.
If the Mountain Lions had hopes for a comeback, the Hilltoppers were quick to dishearten them with a dominating fourth inning.
CYDNEY ERVIN was the first to come home as
ALEX MAYFIELD singled on a bunt. Ervin was followed by Laura Alvardo, who scored off a sacrifice fly to left field from
CAITIE CARNEY. With bases loaded,
KP PERCH singled up the middle, registering two RBI as Roberts and
KACI OLSON put runs on the board.
EMILY MAYFIELD kept the inning alive with a single up the middle to send
MORGAN DUFOUR home.
By the end of the fourth, the tally had risen five runs, to 8-0. St. Edward's managed to keep the Mountain Lions scoreless throughout the contest.
The Hilltoppers absolutely pounded the softball this weekend during the tournament. They hit .448 as a team, averaging 9.6 runs per contest, tallying seven doubles and seven home runs. It was such a dominating performance at the plate that the Hilltoppers reached base over half the time with a .506 on-base percentage.
FAITH ROBERTS led the way with a .611 batting average, with a double, triple, home run and six RBI.
ALEX MAYFIELD hit .533 and was a perfect 5-for-5 on the base paths.
KATELYN KLUG was dominant on the mound, going 3-0 with a 1.87 ERA, while striking out eight in 15.0 innings of work.
ALEX MAYFIELD and
KATELYN KLUG were both selected to the All-Tournament Team for their play.
St. Edward's travels to Canyon, Texas next to compete in the Lady Buff Invite. The first game is set for Friday against West Texas A&M. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. Live coverage will be available on the Buffs Athletic Website.
